Training in non-aversive behaviour management for over fifteen years
The Studio III group comprises three individual companies, all of which promote the ideals,
philosophies and benefits of non-aversive behaviour management. Studio III Training Systems
was the first company to be formed and with its fusion of skills drawn from academic
researchers, applied clinicians, psychologists (educational and clinical), speech and
language therapists, doctors, teachers, movement skills trainers as well as nurses with
RMN and RMNH qualifications; its scope broadened to include individualised behaviour
management plans and the promotion of other pro-active approaches. From this was born
Studio III Clinical Services, a psychology based provider of specialist input to
services and individuals alike.
In the early days, as well as providing training, the company organised events to promote broader aspects of non-aversive behaviour management. As these events became increasingly popular, demand grew to the point that Studio III Innovations was formed to run them.
Since the development of Studio III Training Systems in 1989 over 50,000 staff working in the statutory, private and voluntary sectors have been trained in the Studio III model of managing challenging behaviour. The Company's courses have been developed and clinically tested to give staff the skills they require to meet the particular needs of the service user within a broad base of client populations. Of the various topics covered in the training: working within the law; policy development, understanding the causes of challenging behaviour; the use of the "Low-arousal" approaches including interaction, defusion and distraction strategies; coping with challenging behaviours including debriefing - why it is necessary and how to do it, managing versus changing behaviours, physical avoidance skills and physical intervention strategies, are just a few.
Studio III offers an alternative to traditional methods, some of which are liable to scrutiny under the European Convention on the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, which took effect in the laws of the United Kingdom from October 2000.
This is a specialised service providing clinician's practical advice and
offers support to staff working with people who present with challenges.
Previously the remit of the training company, a dedicated team has been formed
to build on the specialised experienced gained over the last fifteen years in
the domains of both learning disabilities and mental health. The team has been
further expanded with experienced clinicians who have extensive knowledge of
working with older adults, children and adolescents. This provides Clinical
Services with practical and academic strengths which enable our practitioners
to offer advice and support for staff and professionals at both the individual
and systemic level.
Currently the team is involved in
- crisis assessment
- developing pro-active and re-active plans for "high risk" individuals
- developing long term behavioural support strategies
- advising on the deployment of services and providing clinical and service audits
Much of this work contributes to the prevention of placement breakdowns; often a recurring theme in some individuals' care history.
Studio III Innovations is the most recent addition to the Group and organises conferences and seminars for people working in the care professions, allowing them to gain a greater insight into the many factors which may influence the management of challenging behaviours. The company has been host to leading exponents from around the globe providing forums on topics such as communication, movement differences, legal perspectives, psycho pharmacology, developing alternatives to control and restraint, preventing abuse in settings which care for older adults and working with people who self harm.
Studio III Innovations are also the producers of a range of DVD learning packs providing the opportunity for services to run in-house training sessions in the management of challenging behaviour.
