Autism
Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder which significantly affects verbal and non-verbal communication and social interaction. Included in the term ‘Autism Spectrum Disorders’ (ASD) is also Asperger’s Syndrome (AS).
Studio III offer a range of customised services aimed to help individuals, parents and carers cope with the difficulties an ASD diagnosis can bring.

Autism London is a funded registered charity, originally formed in 1984 by parents
concerned about the lack of provision for people with autism and Asperger's
syndrome. They run parent/carer groups and Asperger's groups and have a London
helpline for individuals affected by ASDs.
Paul is a 14 year old young man with a diagnosis of an Autistic Spectrum Disorder and severe learning difficulties. Paul lives in a registered care home for children with autism which he shares with two other children and stays with his parents every second weekend. Staff and parents were having increasing difficulties with managing Paul’s aggressive behaviour as well as frequent self injurious behaviour and felt as if these incidents occurred out of the blue.
Studio III Clinical Services carried out a functional assessment of Paul’s challenging behaviours and carried out extensive staff interviews to gain an understanding of the circumstances of the incidents of challenging behaviour. A sensory assessment was completed for Paul with his mother and key worker, observations with Paul in a variety of settings as well as environmental audit were also carried out.
The results of these assessments lead to recommendations for Low Arousal and autism training both for Paul’s staff team and his parents. Guidelines for reactive and proactive behavioural management were written which placed particular emphasis on Paul’s sensory difficulties and needs and recommendations to adapt the living environment to suit Paul’s individual needs were made. Intensive work in accordance with the Studio III position statement for self injurious behaviour was also undertaken and Paul was supported in learning self restraint methods during times of self injurious behaviour
Follow up visits have shown that the interventions have so far been successful in reducing incidents of challenging behaviour and improving Paul’s quality of life and access to activities. Ongoing support and work is being undertaken.
