Forensic - Case Study

Liam is a 15 year old young person referred for a psychological opinion by his solicitors. At the time of the assessment Liam was on remand at a Young Persons Secure Unit. Liam was charged with a s.18 offence of Wounding with Intent. The advice received from the solicitors asked for opinion on what led him to commit the offence and “how he is functioning” as well as his current mental health state. Liam generally showed difficulties with anger and was prone to aggressive behaviour when angry.

To complete the assessment Liam was interviewed on three separate occasions, these interviews included a number of psychological assessments which looked at constructs such as self esteem, hopelessness and similar.

The results of the interviews showed that Liam was suffering from symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder due to an incident of sexual abuse when he was younger and that these symptoms were affecting him greatly, in particular in relation to his self image and his ability to relate to other people. The results also showed that Liam was suffering from low self esteem, high hopelessness and depressive symptoms.

Recommendations were made for future work to address Liam’s offending behaviour and included regular monitoring of his mental health state and the continuation of therapeutic work around his anger and past experiences. Recommendations regarding the management of Liam’s challenging behaviour, especially his aggressive behaviours, were also given.
