Susan is a 24 year old woman living in supported housing for adults with learning disabilities. Staff were having increasing problems with managing her emotional and physical outbursts and her obsessional behaviours with certain staff members and were unsure of how to go about creating a secure and structured environment.
Studio 3 clinical services carried out an initial psychological assessment that provided practical recommendations for the staff team. A psychological and sensory assessment was completed with Susan, meetings were held with staff, observations were carried out as well as an environmental audit.
This led to recommendations for low arousal training and learning diability training for staff as well as ongoing staff support as required. Guidelines for reactive and proactive behavioural management were written as well as a new weekly routine that offered increased socialisation, independence and structure. One to one work was also undertaken with Susan to build her understanding of relationships and learn relaxation skills to allow self-management of increased anxieties.
Outcomes have so far been successful in reducing incidents, increasing independence and improving staff and client relationships. Ongoing support and work is being undertaken.
