Is it easy to maintain a non aversive approach? The evidence from a number services in the UK is that some staff still struggle to avoid applying punitive consequences. I remember a member of staff with considerable experience telling me that the only way a particular person with learning disabilities listened was when he was threatened with withdrawal of objects that he was attached to. Iwould argue that this cannot develop a positive relationship in the long term. Ask yourself the question what would you do if someone threatened you with a sanction? Did they always work in your case?
