I have just spent a very harrowing hour watching Panorama. How could this level of inhumane treatment be allowed to happen. It was unbelieveable that people could take part in such treatment of individuals and worse still that qualified nursing staff did nothing to intervene and at one point stayed to watch.

Hi Carl

That programme was a true and accurate reflection of practices going on in that Hospital, and was rightly called as torture.

Thanks to Becky for the YouTube info.
Here in Norway very few people have BBC1, but with the YouTube clips we can make this known.

I watched Panorama last night and was horrified. Maybe I'm naive, but I had not believed that something like this could take place in 2011. This truly justifies the great need and existence of Studio III. Thank you for your comment Andy.
Hopefully, there are not such an outrageous treatment of people in need of health and care elsewhere in the UK, here in the DK or anywhere else on the earth.

This was the most horrific abuse and betrayal of the trust of young vulnerable people. How sick must the staff be to get fun and pleasure from torturing those not capable of defending themselves against such treatment. 'All that is necessary for the triumph of evil over good, is that good men do nothing'. Why did nobody listen to the carer who reported the abuse? Why weren't other members of staff voicing concerns about staff practices? Others must have seen the abuse, but by their silence, endorsed it and allowed it to continue.

I hope the perpetrators go to jail for a very long time.

I watched it as I found out about the program earlier in the day. I know a staff member who worked there years ago and left due to poor management although she did not work on the top floor where that was filmed.

People at work have talked about nothing else and are really disgusted and clients have also signed the NAS petition which is really positive. I spoke to the lead in Safeguarding in the South West today (coincidental meeting) and she said two things of interest -

1. Safeguarding were informed and were not very good at responding but they have been fighting to keep minimal resources
2. There was a number of weeks between filming and informing the police etc and worries regarding the safety of those individuals in the short term.

Hopefully this will force social care and health to look at the funding of different departments including all quality assurance systems as they clearly didn't know what they were paying for.

I'm glad we all work towards stopping this happening but its a reminder that we are not there yet.

Unfortunately Kirsten you'd have to be very naive to think this kind of practice doesn't go on routinely in other services throughout the UK.

Hi Everyone! Really interesting reading all you comments. I worked at Winterbourne View last year for 4 months, and blew the whistle constantly. CQC didn't return my calls, and management did not want to listen. I was told I was "too soft", "a do-gooder", and that seeing I'd only been qualified for 3 months "What do you know? This is the way care is." For a short while I thought I'd made the wrong decision going into nursing, and was ready to leave Castlebeck with a sense of failure - in fact I applied to work at ASDA!

I decided to come forward and waive my anonymity, as I wanted to show Terry support. He protected me throughout, but now it's time to stand up together and fight.

I worked for Freeways for 7 years before I qualified as a RNLD, and we used Studio 3. So much more low-arousal than the Maybo we were trained in. In fact, while I was working at Winterbourne View, I was using the principles in de-escalation from Studio 3 as that's what is ingrained in me. It always really helped me, and the worst part was making progress with a patient and then leaving the shift - I knew I was no longer there to keep an eye on things. I knew my hard work would be undone, and that was soul-destroying. I came home from work crying after every single shift, and to top it all off the managers did not believe what I told them. I was told I was too inexperienced, and it was my issue because I was the one who couldn't cope. And I believed them for a while. I knew deep down I was right, and on several occasions whilst on shift I would call the manager/assistant manager to come upstairs and observe the staff working without them knowing they were present. I was told they were too busy, and that I was making a fuss.

Anyway - so much to talk about! Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. I cannot give specific details as there is an ongoing police investigation, and obviously it would be really silly to jeopardise it by saying something silly.

Just feel relieved that it's all done now - I met the BBC in January and I've had to keep it all so quiet up until now! I'm free! And people are safe. That's the main thing!

Ashleigh, thank goodness there are people like you out there. It must have been heart-breaking to witness the abuse. I don't think I shall ever erase the picture of Simone, particulary when she was outside, freezing cold and in shock. It is shocking to witness such evil. People like you, who draw attention to situations like this, deserve a medal for your courage. Thank you for bringing this to public attention. I hope that others who have witnessed similar abuses will now have the courage to stand up and say 'enough'.

Nurses suspended over Panorama 'abuse' film

Two nurses from a private hospital near Bristol where patients were filmed being abused have been temporarily suspended from the nursing register.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council said a suspension order lasts 18 months, but can be reviewed periodically.

A statement said: "A panel of the investigating committee placed an interim suspension order against the registration of Mr Sookalingum Appoo and Mr Kelvin Fore pending a full investigation into allegations of serious breaches of the NMC code of conduct.

Unreserved apology

"The NMC is the only authority with the power to stop nurses and midwives, whose conduct or competence has been called in question, from practising."

40 charges against staff at Winterbourne View

As many as 10 staff from Castlebeck’s Winterbourne View home have been charged with a total of 40 offences following abuse uncovered at the unit by a BBC documentary earlier this year.

The news comes just days after an independent review of the troubled care home operator recommended Castlebeck’s management structure is completely overhauled and the size, location and function of each of its units should be reviewed.

In June a BBC Panorama documentary filmed Castlebeck staff abusing patients at Winterbourne View. The troubled care home operator subsequently closed three units and has admitted referrals have fallen as commissioners’ confidence in the brand fell away.

The 10 staff arrested as a result face a total of 40 charges under the Mental Capacity Act in relation to the treatment of four of the home’s 24 residents

Winterbourne View staff charged with neglect and ill-treatmentPrivate hospital for people with learning difficulties in Bristol was closed following allegations broadcast by BBC Panorama

Ten people have been charged over the alleged neglect and ill-treatment of vulnerable patients at a private hospital for people with learning difficulties. The 10 were charged with a total of 40 offences against four alleged victims at the Winterbourne View hospital, in Hambrook, near Bristol.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said: "Police have confirmed that they have charged 10 people in connection with ill treatment and neglect offences under the Mental Health Act. "
