It is a recurring theme that rituals are often altered for the 'service users own good'. It is very common to observe people complain that when they STOP one ritual another takes its place. But, ask yourself the question, is the specific ritual always that bad or debilitating. Many object holding or checking rituals in my view are coping startegies. That is, they help people with ASD reduce their anxiety. So instead of calling it a 'ritual or obsession' call it a coping strategy, you might think twice about modifying it!
