Professor Jim Mansell

‘It was with great sadness that today I heard of the death of Professor Jim Mansell. He was an individual who contributed substantially to the research on quality of care, challenging behaviour, and person centred approaches to name a few areas. Of course the ‘Mansell report’ became a phrase that was used by professionals with a degree of reverence. His advisory role to government always made us feel that there was a real advocate on the side of people with intellectual disabilities. On a personal note Jim was a person who spoke with real gravitas on the subject of the care of people with intellectual disabilities. I always found Jim to be supportive and encouraging of my own work in the field. I can remember him asking me at one conference ‘Andy please tell me that PhD of yours is completed’.
