'When I'm stressed and melting down, how do I want to be treated?'
Studio 3's Train Trainers course goes beyond simply teaching trainers to deliver physical interventions and crisis management training. We seek to instill a philosophical approach to training in all potential trainers, demonstrating that restrictive practices are not the key to managing behaviours of concern. Rather, our trainers provide de-escalation training that focuses on stress reduction and immediate crisis management, starting with reflective practice and Low Arousal Approaches.
In order for our programme to be sustainable, it is important for us to educate potential trainers to the highest standard in all aspects of Studio 3's philosophy, theory, and practice.
As an organisation we limit the number of spaces each year, as we believe it is important to train high quality In-House trainers. Our programme is much longer than our competitors (being a minimum of 15 working days) as we expect trainers to be able to communicate knowledge both in classrooms and in practical settings. Attendees will book 3 x 5 day commitments to complete their training.
Organisations or services who wish to review whether our training would be a good fit for their setting can attend a 3-day Look and See course with key members of staff.
Why is the Studio 3 programme different?
Staff training in physical interventions is an area in which research is at best crude (Allen, 2002). There have been extensive debates worldwide about the safety of specific intervention techniques such as prone restraint holds (Norwood, Ciccone, Kennedy, Faucher Moy, Allrich and Naiditch, 2011) and even a call to officially ban the teaching of such holds (McDonnell, 2007).
In the UK, the British Institute of Learning Disabilities has developed an accreditation system with a Code of Practice (BILD, 2002) in an attempt to regulate training standards within the industry. Our training programmes at Studio 3 do not focus on teaching physical interventions as part of our staff training. We believe in low arousal approaches to behaviours which challenge, and train our trainers to de-escalate crisis situations rather than to physically restrain vulnerable people.
Individuals who are trained as trainers are role models for our work. We believe that our In-House training trainers programme sets the highest quality assurance and training standards.

Course Structure
Studio 3's Train the Trainer course is made up of 3 x 5-day blocks (15 days total) covering the following topics:
-
Level 1 - Understanding Low Arousal
-
Level 2 - Basic self-protection principles
-
Level 3 - The Last Resort (Restraint reduction and Studio 3 restraint methods)
The course has been newly modularised in order to allow trainers to participate in one or more levels of training depending on need.
"Too often, staff are taught methods such as prone (face down) and supine (face up) holds, with the message that these methods are a 'last resort.' At Studio 3, we draw a line in the sand and never teach such methods. Our philosophy is that ‘less is more.'"

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why does this course last longer than other trainer training programmes?
We believe that in order to achieve the maximum benefits of this course, trainers require at least 15 days of coaching. Our goal at Studio III is not simply to educate trainers on how to carry out our training courses effectively, but also to impact the way they think about training and intervention in general.
Q: What are the foundations for this course?
Our train the trainers programme is founded upon a clear evidence base of applied psychological research and academic studies. Our trainers will be taught the theoretical and practical rationality behind our methods and approaches, as well as the philosophy which drives our training.
Q: Is there a pass/fail criterion for this course?
Yes. Unlike other trainer training programmes, we have a clear set of aims and objectives for potential trainers, who are assessed at three stages of the course. This includes assessing delivery of our training to real life audiences. Trainers are taught methods such as roleplay and audience interaction in order to facilitate learning, rather than to rely upon less engaging presentations.
Q: What is the outcome of this course?
In addition to remaining in contact with all of our qualified trainers for future talks and events hosted by Studio 3, we expect all successful candidates to attend a minimum of 2 days of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training per annum. At Studio 3, our trainers are given a life-long philosophy, and we hope that our continued support and mentoring enables further learning post training.
